Power-sharing talks in Zimbabwe look set to collapse, if President Robert Mugabe goes ahead with plans to unilaterally name a new government leaving out the main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change.

Zimbabwe’s deputy information minister said “Nothing is going to stop us from forming a new government” and Mugabe was quoted as saying the MDC “apparently doesn’t want to join.”

But opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s party warned that if Mugabe names a cabinet without MDC members that will kill the negotiations on power-sharing. Those talks stalled two weeks ago. They are supposed to end Zimbabwe’s political crisis following a disputed election.

Trying to put the best face on things, the new speaker of Zimbabwe’s parliament, Lovemore Moyo, from the opposition MDC, said the talks are continuing but his party’s frustrations over the political deadlock in the country are building.
