The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is staging a major production of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. The epic opera of tragic love and partnerships has been credited with changing the way Western classical music was written, moving from traditional harmonies, to atonal works of the 20th century. This production has been a long time in the making. Israeli virtuoso Daniel Barenboim and French director Patrice Chéreau first had the idea more than 25 years ago.
