Amber is a rich source of fossil evidence and at the Grenoble ESRF Synchrotron the powerful X-rays available to palaeontologists allows them to study opaque amber impossible using classical techniques. Scientists studied 640 pieces of amber and found 356 animals, dating from 100 million years ago. Amber is an ancient resin that trapped insects and other life forms. The technology used to study the contents of the amber is high resolution Micro-tomography.
