Weather More flooding forecast for UK 07/09/08 12:52 CET

There are flood warnings in place across England and Wales. Though rain has eased, the Environment Agency says there may be more flooding for days to come, because of rainwater draining into rivers. Northumberland has been hit the hardest so far, with around 1000 properties flooded in the town of Morpeth. Hundreds of people were evacuated from their houses, after the River Wansbeck burst its banks. They were taken to a local school and county hall. Five people have died in accidents related to the heavy rains. One of the victims was a 17-year-old girl, travelling in a four-wheel-drive which overturned crossing a river.
 
In southern France, flood waters are receding, after heavy rains yesterday. Hundreds were evacuated from their homes in the Drome and Ardeche regions, as storms caused mud and landslides. Three people were injured – including a seven-year-old girl. The authorities are still struggling to deal with traffic chaos caused, as roads were cut, isolating several towns.
