A referendum on a controversial rail project in Germany has resulted in nearly 60 per cent of voters opting to continue its state funding.

Stuttgart 21, as it’s known, forms part of a scheme that will modernise the link between Paris, Vienna and Budapest, aiming to introduce Stuttgart as “The new heart of Europe.”

There have been mass protests against the multi-billion euro project, with many people believing the money would be better spent elsewhere.
