As celebrations by Barcelona supporters drew to a close after the team’s Champions League victory, violence erupted on the streets of the city.

Some fans clashed with police. Around 90 people were injured, at least two of them seriously, as bottles were thrown and scuffles broke out. Around 20 people were arrested.

The fans headed to Catalonia Square where hundreds of demonstrators have been camped out to protest at high unemployment and austerity cuts.

They, themselves, had clashed with police on Friday as authorities moved in to clear their tent camp. But last night, the mainly young protesters stopped football fans from entering the square, holding up signs saying “No to Violence” when police arrived.
