Tributes are paid to Elizabeth Taylor

world news

Flowers have been laid on Hollywood’s famous “walk of fame” in tribute to the passing of one of the film industry’s greatest stars.

Elizabeth Taylor’s death at the age of 79 has saddened film goers the world over.

In London where she was born to American parents her movies were recalled with affection.

Taylor’s charisma and beauty on screen were recognised internationally. French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterand said she was the “ultimate star”.

And she played life to the full too. Married eight times, twice to fellow acting great Richard Burton, she was also a generous humanitarian with her work for AIDS charities.

Her death marks the end of an era when the real lives of movies stars were every bit as fascinating as their celluloid creations.
