Gunmen have shot dead the governor of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Salman Taseer was a senior member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party. The party has recently been undermined by the withdrawal of a junior partner in the coalition, leaving the government without a majority and the country in crisis.

Taseer was shot at a market near his home in Islamabad. According to police one of his bodyguards was involved in the attack.
