Capitalism’s favourite bogeyman Fidel Castro has admitted that the communist economic model doesn’t work. Cuba’s former long-time leader made his surprising comments to an American journalist in Havana. It seems he agrees with brother Raul’s modest reforms to stimulate growth.

Journalist Jeffrey Goldberg spoke to Castro last week. He asked him if Soviet-style communism was still worth promoting – Castro said it doesn’t even work for Cuba, and that he believed the state had too great a role in everyday life in Cuba.

In a wide-ranging interview, Castro criticised Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust, saying he was anti-Semitic.

But, he also said he feared the growing tensions between Iran, America and Israel could result in nuclear war.
