Attempting to defuse rising tensions over a leaked UN report.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is in Rwanda, urging the government not to withdraw its peacekeeping operations in Sudan.

The threat comes after the leak of a draft report that says that Rwandan soldiers may have committed genocide in the DR Congo in the 1990s.

Ban Ki-moon said: “Both the president and I are disappointed by (the fact that) the draft of the report had been leaked. The United Naitons is interested in establishing all the facts relating to incidents in the DRC and covered by this mapping exercise.”

Ban Ki-moon says he has urged Rwanda to submit its comments by the end of the month. He says they will then be released along with the final version of the report, which covers ten years of conflict in the region.

Observers say the withdrawal of Rwanda’s 3,500 troops from the 20,000 strong UN-African Union force in Darfur would be a serious blow.
