Iran confirms suspension of stoning death

world news

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has won a stay of execution.

The Iranian government has confirmed that it has suspended her sentence of death by stoning.

Authorities say the sentence for adultery, which provoked outrage around the world, is now being reviewed.

Only today the European Parliament voted to condemn the sentence, calling on Tehran to reverse it.

Amid growing worldwide protest over the case, Iranian media had already been suggesting that the punishment of death by stoning would not be carried out.

But it had been reported that Ashtiani might still be executed by hanging.

Authorities say they are still investigating charges that the woman was involved in her husband’s murder.

The case has further strained relations between Iran and the West.
