The state of emergency in New Zealand’s second city Christchurch has been extended after another powerful earthquake. On Saturday the city was hit by a 7.1 magnitude quake; this morning a tremor measuring 5.1 was recorded, described by many as a violent jolt.

Many of Christchurch’s historic buildings have been damaged beyond repair, and will have to be demolished. More than 100 aftershocks have hit the area since Saturday, and seismologists warn a tremor measuring six could happen soon.
