The Greek prime minister has ordered an almost-complete cabinet reshuffle to breathe new life into the fight against his country’s continuing debt crisis. The changes are not expected to affect spending cuts and tax rises required in a 110 billion euro IMF/EU bailout to rescue Greece from bankruptcy. Only Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou stays in his role; he also gets the Economics portfolio.

The opposition isn’t impressed: “It only took eleven months and one long night for the prime minister to realise the failure of his government,” said New Democracy spokesman Panos Panagiotopoulos.

Recent polls showed voters wanted changes, with unemployment and inflation soaring. Several ministers were judged to have been dragging their feet in attacking Greece’s crippling debt burden.
