Syrians flee into Turkey as troops approach Lebanon’s prime minister Saad al-Hariri has said he was wrong to accuse Syria of killing his father, the former PM Rafik al-Hariri.
His comments were published in the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat. The Lebanese leader said the charge against Damascus was ill-founded and politically motivated.
Syria has always denied involvement in the killing.
The Lebanese leader has visited Damascus several times to patch up relations. He also says that an international inquiry into his father’s murder, which initially implicated Syria, was misled.
The Beirut truck bomb in February 2005 that killed the then prime minister and 22 others caused an international outcry.
It prompted Damascus to withdraw troops from Lebanese soil after nearly 30 years of military presence.
There have been reports that the UN prosecutor may indict members of the militant Shi’ite group Hezbollah over the murder. It denies involvement.
