New Zealand on alert after massive quake

Thousands of people are spending a second night in shelter after a 7.1 magnitude quake struck New Zealand’s second bigest city, Christchurch.

A state of emergency has been declared with a nightime curfew imposed on the central business district.

Christchurch city and the neighbouring small towns bore the brunt of the earthquake, which struck in the early hours of this morning..

But tremors were felt across much of the region.

The area continued to feel aftershocks as strong as 5.3.

Railway lines were brought down and many buildings suffered considerable damage.

Early estimates for the cost of repairs are around 2 billion euros.
