The first direct talks for nearly two years between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders have been hailed as “constructive” by the United States.

Before the negotiations started, Hillary Clinton expressed hope that this effort could succeed where so many others have failed.

“We cannot and will not impose a solution. Only you can make the decision necessary to reach an agreement and secure a peaceful future for the Israeli and Palestinian people,” said the US Secretary of State.

Nevertheless, the US has set both sides a goal of striking a deal within 12 months to come up with a two-state solution and settle issues over Israeli occupied land.

Despite widespread scepticism about the chances of this latest attempt to secure peace, the two leaders have agreed to meet again in two weeks.
