Russian police raid opposition magazine

Russian security forces have raided a leading opposition magazine that has printed articles alleging high-level corruption.

‘The New Times’ is facing a libel action over an investigative report about the much-feared riot police, called OMON.

A senior magazine source said officers, some armed and masked, came to its offices to carry out what they called “investigative actions.”

But Editor-in-Chief Yevgenia Albatz explained why the publication does not want to hand over full details of its sources.

She said one of them is a serving member of the riot police and repeated several times that he did not want to give his name because his life would be under threat.

It is believed the search was for audio or video recordings of interviews with those who had provided information.

“The New Times” weekly is one of Moscow’s few prominent opposition media outlets.
