Serbia is showing signs of considering a compromise in its position on Kosovo, following impatience voiced by some European partners. Serbian President Boris Tadic has expressed a new openness to discussion on Kosovo, with officials said to be ready to head for Brussels to consider possible changes to Serbia’s proposed resolution in the United Nations.

Belgrade chose to take the UN General Assembly route following the ruling in July of the International Court of Justice that Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence in 2008 did not violate international law. Serbia considers the matter still in suspense.

Sixty-nine countries have recognised Kosovo as an independent state, although five of the European Union’s 27 members have not. Since it wants to become an EU member, Serbia has been urged to make concessions.

On Saturday, President Tadic said his country would never recognise Kosovo but was looking for solutions acceptable to both Serbia’s national interests and those of big powers.
