US Vice President Joe Biden has arrived in Iraq as American troops prepare to end combat operations officially.

Biden was set to hold talks with Iraqi leaders with a view to breaking a six-month political deadlock the result of an inconclusive election in March.

The so-called “Operation New Dawn” begins on Wednesday, marking the beginning of the end of the US military’s seven-year mission in Iraq.

Some 50,000 U.S. troops will remain in Iraq, a third of the contingent three years ago when the country was on the brink of civil war.
