Air guitar fans strike a chord in Finland

world news

| |

The 15th annual World Air Guitar Championships have been held in northern Finland.

Contestants of all ages from as far afield as Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and Brazil flew in for the competition.

Thousands of fans also turned up to watch – but not listen – in the town of Oulu.

And the purpose was definitely not to string everyone along – world peace was the ultimate aim:

“This is something anyone can do, maybe you can be on stage some day, anyone can be on stage. Maybe that could be the reason why people like this so much.” said judge Juha Torvinen.

Frenchman Sylvain Quimene was declared the “airiest of them all” He was one of more than 20 competitors from 19 countries. Gunther Love, as he is known on stage, took home the real thing as a prize – an electric guitar.
