At least three people have been killed after Lebanese groups in Beirut exchanged machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

It appears a row between a Shi’ite Hezbollah supporter and a member of the Sunni al-Ahbash escalated dramatically.

Local authorities say two Hezbollah have been killed and one al-Ahbash.

The two groups are politically close and have issued a joint communique about the violence claiming the deaths were caused by an intruder seeking to make trouble.

Al-Ahbash says it is hunting the intruder and will hand him over to the authorities.

Tensions are high in Lebanon right now with Hezbollah fearing a UN report could implicate the group in the 2005 killing of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.
