German protesters are demanding the resignation of the mayor of Duisburg, where 21 people died in a stampede at last weekend’s Love Parade.

Mourning has turned into finger-pointing, with no one yet publicly admitting responsibility for the chaos that led to the tragedy.

A police probe has begun, with claims that local officials and organisers ignored warnings that the site of the event was too small to cope with the huge crowds expected. Some blame the police for letting too many people through into a small space.

Mayor Adolf Sauerland has so far refused to step down. He denies any wrongdoing and says he is cooperating with the investigation. The organisers have cancelled the event for good.

Local media say Germans are dumbfounded by what happened, as they are so used to bureaucrats demanding an almost excessive standard of organisation at public events.
