The Afghan president has joined the US in condemning the website Wikileaks over what appears to have been the release of names of informants.

“Names of certain Afghans who have cooperated with the coalition, NATO, have been also revealed in these documents,” said Karzai at a media conference. “This indeed is extremely irresponsible and shocking.”

Wikileaks, in cooperation with three major news organisations, published 90,000 classified US military files on the war in Afghanistan.

The website’s founder says the documents were checked for named informants, but it has since been claimed that not all of those at risk had their names withheld.

The Pentagon has said the people named have reason to fear for their lives. But some may wonder if the US and Kabul might have made the matter worse by highlighting the case and confirming the named people are informants.
