Music played on Cuban television as Fidel Castro, looking almost like his old self in a green military shirt, made his latest public appearance.

Given a rapturous reception, he was honouring rebels who died in an attack in 1953 seen as marking the start of the Cuban revolution.

The ceremony took place in the city of Artemisa, 60 kilometres outside Havana. It was Castro’s first known trip beyond the capital since he re-emerged publicly two weeks ago.

While health problems forced the 83-year-old to hand over power to his younger brother, he is apparently back on form. And there is speculation that Fidel may join Raul Castro at Cuba’s main Revolution Day event on Monday.

This weekend, the comandante indirectly repeated his recent message of doom that nuclear war is imminent.
