BP halts oil spill work as storm enters Gulf

With Tropical Storm Bonnie’s arrival imminent, BP has suspended its operations to deal with the US oil spill.

Ships captains on site were deciding for themselves when to withdraw their vessels to safety. Command Centre team members have already packed up and moved out.

Officials say the blown-out well will remain capped but Bonnie’s bearing on this disaster is not being underestimated.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said: “Obviously we are concerned about the impact this will have on delaying the relief wells, delaying the skimming and the other activities out there, but also the impact of throwing new oil further in and especially when you look at the the tidal surges that are projected two to five feet along the coastline, especially the southeastern part of our coast.”

Bonnie weakened to a tropical depression after moving across Florida yesterday but could regain Tropical Storm strength over the Gulf of Mexico.

Heavy seas and rain are expected, adding to the sense of urgency.
