Europeans are calling on member states to do more to improve road safety according to a new EU survey.

Ninety four per cent of people believe that drink driving is most pressing road safety issue along with speeding.

It is part of an ongoing EU drive to reduce the number of road traffic accidents across the union.

Siim Kallas is the European Transport Commissioner:

“The very fact that we have made so much progress in the last ten years means it is more difficult to go further. We will need to use engineering and technology, as well as a more traditional methods of training and enforcement.”

Along with the development and introduction of new safety technology Europeans want member states to focus on improving road infrastructure backed by a more stringent application of existing traffic laws.

The EU’s ultimate objective is to halve the number of fatalities on Europe’s roads.
