The Czech President Vaclav Klaus has appointed Petr Necas as prime minister.

The right-wing Civic Democrat leader has
been officially sworn-in to lead a strong government capable of launching cost-cutting measures and widespread changes to the pension and health systems.

His party has been holding coalition talks with two smaller centre-right groups since last month’s election, but the negotiations have stalled over who holds which posts.

If the three parties agree on a government, it would have the biggest majority since the Czech Republic split with Slovakia in 1993.

Outgoing Prime Minister Jan Fischer, who has headed a caretaker cabinet for more than a year, will stay on until Necas submits his proposed line-up.
