BP puts new man in charge of US oil spill

BP has put a new man in charge of its day to day handling of the worst oil spill in US history.

English Chief Executive Tony Hayward has been slammed for a series of public relations gaffes. Now the hands-on response to the crisis will be guaranteed, with immediate effect, by another senior executive, American Bob Dudley. It comes amid efforts to restore confidence and rehabilitate the firm’s image.

He will report to Hayward whose latest run in with public opinion came at the weekend when he attended a yacht race off the English coast. As BP struggles to plug the huge Gulf of Mexico oil leak, this prompted renewed criticism from the White House.
