Nobel Prize winning author Saramago dead at 87

world news

Portuguese Nobel-prize winning author Jose Saramago has died at his home in Lanzarote at the age of 87.

He moved to the Spanish Canary Islands in symbolic exile in 1992 when the Portuguese government blocked his novel, The Gospel
According to Jesus Christ, from being nominated for a European literary prize.

A former member of Portugal’s Communist party, he was widely known for his left-wing views.

He once described Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as “vomit” and compared the suffering of the Palestinians to Auschwitz.

He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998 — the same year he married his wife, Spanish journalist Pilar del Rio.
