A protest by nurses in Paris has ended in scuffles with the police.

The protesters held a sit-in on railway tracks, calling for greater recognition of the work they do, before the police were called in to remove them.

The nurses complain their salaries do not reflect the specialised training they carried out to be anaesthetist support staff.

One nurse said: “We’re mistreated. This is what it’s come to because the government made us promises they didn’t keep. They don’t listen to us. We’re anaesthetist nurses, and all we want is for our five years of study to be recognised.”

The nurses say the government no longer recognises their two years’ extra training, and is allowing non-specialised nurses to work in anaesthetics. Rail traffic between Paris and Western France was brought to a halt during the protest.
