The Russian finger of blame may be pointing to the Caucasus for the attacks in Moscow, but there was calm on the streets of the chechen capital Grozy earlier today. The independent Republic was once the theatre of two deadly wars during the 1990s. The Kremlin’s anti-terror operations officially ended in Chechnya in April 2009.

But the threat from radical Islamists who want to breakaway from the Russia’s grip remains ever present. Next to Chechnya, the neighbouring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and North Ossetia have become a hotbed for insurrection and unrest.

Even though the latest bombings in Moscow are the first major attacks in several years in the capital, as these recent images in Dagestan show, the threat to authorities in the Caucasus has not gone away.
