Barack Obama has signed his revolutionary US healthcare reform bill into law.

He and his Vice-President Joe Biden were given a rapturous reception by members of Congress in the East Room of the White House.

Today’s historic ceremony marks the culmination of a hard-fought battle to get the measure passed.
Now that is done, health coverage will be extended to 32 million uninsured Americans.

Republicans are vowing to fight the changes in the courts and many members of the public remain to be convinced. But today was a moment for the US President to savour.
