Airstrikes on Gaza, clashes in West Bank

world news

A new outbreak of violence in the Middle East is making the work of the international quartet of mediators more difficult.

Clashes continue today in the West Bank, amid growing anger over the announcement of further Israeli settlement expansion.

Israeli fighter jets have also struck at least half a dozen targets in Gaza.

Two civilians are reported to have been wounded in the strikes, which appear to have targeted tunnels used for smuggling along the border with Egypt.

The Israeli offensive comes a day after a Palestinian rocket strike on Israel, which killed a worker from Thailand.

It was the first deadly rocket attack from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in more than a year.
