Cuban officials prevent women’s protest rally Female family members of imprisoned dissidents in Cuba have been man-handled by police into waiting buses and then driven away.
As the so-called “Ladies in White” attempted to walk through the outskirts of the capital Havana,
about 200 government supporters marched along side, jostling and insulting the women.
What was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration degenerated into a shouting match, with state security guards intervening and hauling the women on to waiting coaches.
This was the third march held this week by the “Ladies in White” who are protesting against the 2003 imprisonment of their husbands and sons, most of whom are still in jail.
Cuba today has an estimated 200 political prisoners, several of whom have staged hunger strikes. Cuba’s leadership denies their status and describes them as mercenaries working for the US to subvert the state.
