Surprise fall in UK jobless claims

Britain’s dole queues shrank in February by the biggest amount since 1997.

The fall in unemployment benefit claimants surprised the financial markets and could give the Labour government a boost before the general election expected in early May.

But the Office for National Statistics also said the overall employment rate was at its lowest since late 1996, which suggests a difficult path to recovery for the UK.
