A French policeman has been shot and killed after his patrol was fired upon by suspected Basque separatists.

The 52-year-old officer and his colleagues stopped a speeding car near a garage in a suburb east of Paris.

One man was arrested after the shoot out – he has been identified as Joseba Fernandez Aspurz.

A big police operation was launched at the scene after it is thought between four and six others including a woman managed to escape.

A police witness said at least one of the men spoke using the Basque language.

The incident comes after the arrest of a senior leader of the Basque separatist group ETA in France last month.

ETA is blamed for over 800 deaths in its 41-year campaign for independence for the Basque region, which lies on the border between France and Spain.
