UK’s Lib Dems relish tight election race

Election fever is taking hold in the UK with opinion polls pointing to the closest outcome in years. Most political pundits believe May 6th will be the date but the result is likely to be a hung parliament.

Over the last few weeks the opposition Conservatives have seen their lead steadily narrow.
A poll in the “Sunday Telegraph” still put them ahead of the ruling Labour party but the “Sunday Times” was less convincing.

It means Britain’s third party, the Liberal Democrats could hold the balance of power. Leader Nick Clegg told the party faithful: “When all the speculation is said and done,I keep coming back to some simple truths: I am not the king-maker. The 45 million voters of Britain are the king-makers. You are the king-makers,” he said.

Clegg is playing his cards close to his chest. At his party’s pre-election conference he refused to say which side he would be prepared to do business with given the expected inconclusive result.

Which ever way he jumps, it could be the Lib Dems’ most influential hour.
