It is being reported that at least one Spanish woman held by al-Qaeda insurgents in Mali has been freed, however the release of another female Italian hostage which was also imminently expected has so far not taken place.
The Spanish aid worker is said to have landed back in Barcelona after leaving Burkina Faso.
All four remaining hostages, which include an Italian man and two Spanish men, are still being held by the militants. Madrid said it hoped to announce ‘‘good news’‘ regarding their fate soon.
The voluntary workers were kidnapped in Mauritania at the end of November last year while delivering relief to villages.
