Former president’s stolen corpse recovered

The missing remains of former Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos have been found, three months after being stolen from the grave.

The body was identified by DNA tests. It was found after a tip-off – five kilometres from where it had been buried – hidden in another grave.

The Cypriot authorities had sought the help of Western intelligence services and even Interpol in a bid to solve the unusual crime. It is not clear whether a ransom demand had been made.

Papadopoulos served as Cypriot President from 2003 until early 2008, when he lost his bid for re-election to Demetris Christofias, the current head of state. Papadopoulos died of lung cancer later that year.
