Biden reassures Israel over security concerns

US Vice President Joe Biden has assured Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Washington’s unstinting support over security concerns.

At a meeting in Jerusalem, Biden repeated a US pledge to curb Iran’s nuclear programme and welcomed Netanyahu’s move this week to begin US- mediated indirect talks with the Palestinians.

“The cornerstone of the relationship is our absolute, total, unvarnished commitment to Israel’s security,” he said.

“Bibi you have heard me say this before. Progress occurs in the Middle East when everyone knows there is simply no space between the United States and Israel. There is no space between the United States and Israel when it comes to Israel’s security.”

Political analysts say the US is keen to ensure Israel does not embark on military action against Iran while Washington seeks a wide coalition to agree to impose sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear programme.
