Japanese lending down again

Lending by Japanese banks to companies and individuals fell again in February from a year earlier. It was down by one and half percent. It was the third month running that has happened.

Smaller firms particularly, which employ the bulk of Japan’s workforce, are not borrowing because of pessimism about the economic outlook.

The figures cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Japanese central bank’s policy in fighting deflation.
