Indian temple stampede kills 63

Police in India say 63 people have been killed in  a crowd stampede in Uttar Pradesh in the north of the country.

More than half of the victims were children. The others were all women.

Thousands of people had gathered in Kunda at a popular temple for free food and clothes distribution by the local monk. Panic swept through the crowd as it bunched to get in the temple, and a gate under construction collapsed, pinning victims to the groud with a large metal door.

Temple officials say they had been overwhelmed by a much bigger-than-expected response to their handouts. Another 125 people were injured in the crush.

Police initially struggled to restore calm as the tiny village resembled a war zone. Local medical facilities were quickly unable to cope and many people were taken to the state capital Lucknow for treatment.
