A powerful security presence kept anti-government protestors away from the President’s rally.

State-run Press TV showed demonstrators bearing the green of the opposition clashing with Basij militiamen and the Revolutionary Guard.

Supporters of the defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi used the revolution’s anniversary – like many previous public celebrations – to press home their belief that last June’s election was rigged.

The son of opposition leader Mahdi Karroubi said his father’s car had been smashed by hardliners wielding pepper-spray, preventing him from joining the protests.

But even anti-government websites spoke of turnout in the hundreds rather than the considerably larger crowds of previous demonstrations.
