In Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich, who secured a narrow victory in the presidential election at the weekend, has publicly called on his opponent to concede defeat and leave her job as Prime Minister.

Speaking on Russian TV Yanukovich said: “People are tired of waiting. That’s why I am calling on the Prime Minister to resign and join the opposition.”

His opponent Julia Tymoshenko has ignored international endorsements of the election, and has threatened a lengthy legal case claiming fraud.

But even some of her supporters expressed unease over her challenge which could delay work to improve Ukraine’s failing economy.
