Yanukovich’s comeback fiesta in Kiev

world news

There has been no official announcement of the final result, but the comeback fiesta has already begun.

And victory does look more certain now for Viktor Yanukovich after a presidential run-off on Sunday.

Ukraine’s electoral commission says with almost all of the votes counted, the pro-Russian candidate has a lead of a couple of points over rival Yulia Tymoshenko.

The commission says remaining results still have to come in from Yanukovich’s strongholds, and his lead will only increase.

Yanukovich is making a comeback after being ousted by Tymoshenko and her allies in the 2004 Orange Revolution.

Prime Minister Tymoshenko is due to hold a media conference but it is not known if she will concede defeat. Earlier she had threatened street protests and legal action if she suspected electoral fraud.
