The French port of Calais has once again been the scene of clashes between migrants trying to cross to the UK and security forces.

Large numbers of police moved in to empty a warehouse rented by an activist group, No Border, and opened to migrants a day earlier.

Around 100 immigrants had moved in but when they left for food they were blocked from returning.

French Immigration minister Eric Besson applauded the operation. “I had said that we would not allow a new “jungle” or “Sangatte” in Calais, Paris, Corsica or anywhere else on French soil,” he said.

Sangatte was the name of a refugee camp set up near Calais by the Red Cross to offer shelter to the large numbers of migrants trying to make it to Britain.

It was shut down in 2002, after which migrants camped around the town in an area that became known as “the jungle” largely because of the lawless and insanitary conditions.

Authorities moved in to clear that in September last year.
