Her first priority would be Haiti. New European Commissioner-designate Kristalina Georgieva has come through a hearing at the European Parliament earning a much better reception than Bulgaria’s previous nominee for the humanitarian aid and crisis response portfolio.

“If I am confirmed, it will be my immediate duty to make sure we Europeans bring to Haiti the best our Union has to offer.”

Georgieva is an economist, since March 2008 Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group. Hers was the last hearing to be held for the members nominated by the 27 EU governments to the bloc’s executive body in Brussels.

Georgieva replaced fellow Bulgarian Rumiana Jeleva who withdrew. MEPs will vote on whether to accept the full Commission next Tuesday.
