Some say politics and beauty go hand-in-hand, but it appears no-one told 18-year-old Miss Belgium winner Cilou Annys

Annys sparked controversy when she posed in a magazine with nationalist politician Bart de Wever, who wants independence for the Dutch-speaking region of northern Belgium from the francophone south of Wallonia.

The provocative photo shows de Wever slicing through the word Belgium, embroided on Ms Annys winner’s sash.

“I don’t care Bart de Wever. He’s against Belgium and I’m for Belgium. I like the Walloons, I really like the Flemish. For me, they are all Belgians. I also have grandparents from Wallonia so there’s no problem there.”

It’s not the first time that the contest has highlighted tensions between Belgium’s two linguistic communities.

Miss Belgium 2008 Alizee Poulicek was booed on stage when she revealed on live TV that she couldn’t speak Dutch, drawing scorn from Flemish media.
