Government subsidised scrapping schemes continued to distort the European new car market.

The industry association figures for December were up 16 percent year on year.

Purchase incentive schemes boosted sales in France by nearly 50 percent and there were up almost 40 percent in Britain.

Volkswagen’s sales were hit by the fact that Germany’s scrapping scheme ended early in September.
