Immigrants riot in Italy amid racial unrest

world news

Dozens of migrants have clashed with police in the southern region of Calabria.

Authorities say the violence in the town of Rosarno erupted overnight on Thursday after a gang of white youths fired air rifles at migrants returning from work. Property was vandalised and dozens wounded.

Tension remained high throughout Friday. As migrants took to the streets again, local residents staged their own protest against the riots.

Some fifteen hundred migrants live in squalid conditions in the area, many working on farms.

Human rights groups say they’re exploited by organised crime networks.
